答案 What Should Be the Main Function of a University? Nowadays, there is an increased awareness about the responsibilities and functions of university education in our country. In this heated argument, universities in mounting numbers find themselves involved in a dilemma whether they should reach for the bear’s paw or for the shark’s fin. Some people hold the opinion that a university should focus on providing working skills for future career, while the other think that a university should place emphasis on the knowledge for its own sake. From my perspective, a university should give the same priority on providing work-related knowledge and academic knowledge. First of all, work-related knowledge and skills offered by universities will help college students get more certificates and job opportunities. In other words, the more certificates the college students gain, the more job opportunities they have. For example, if a student want to be a glorious teacher, she should obtain formal and systematic teaching knowledge such as pedagogy, psychology knowledge and teaching techniques. All those work-related knowledge and skills will help her get a Teacher Certification and other relevant certificates easily. The instance of the same sort might be quoted easily but this example will be sufficient to show that work-related knowledge not only enhance the graduates’ employment rate but also give a perfect opportunity to succeed in the further career. Moreover, the academic knowledge is also an indispensable factor and a building block of a qualified worker that cannot overlooked. For example, the wide range of courses that universities offered to their students such as philosophy, psychology, and history will cultivate the capabilities of critical thinking and improve the abilities of exploring problems independently, which are the lifeblood of a qualified worker. Therefore, the academic knowledge is the precondition and solid foundation of a qualified worker. In general, it is difficult to split the connection of such two aspects. Therefore, a university should integrate those two functions organically in order to live up to the efficiency. For one thing, college students should master more theoretical knowledge to lay a firm foundation for their future professions, for another, college students should try their best to put the academic knowledge into practice. Only in this way can they meet the requirements of the modern society and make great contribution to the community.
