Should Universities Attach Equal Importance to Sports and Cultural Knowledge? As a senior at college, I have received more than 15 years’ formal education. During the past 15 years, what impress me most is no other than a variety of exams. As our abilities are mostly measured by exam results in the present education system, physical education in schools is ignored, and thus lies far behind other subjects. However, in recent years, as the reform of education system advances rapidly, students’ physical education attracts more and more attention. In this case, the physical training in universities, which is the last process in scholastic physical edu-cation, becomes a topic under hot debate. Some people propose that universities should give the same amount of money to sport activities as to their libraries while others hold completely opposite view. Standing by the former, I believe that universities should value physical education as much as they value academic study. First of all, the principal function of physical education lies in that it can strengthen students’ bodies. As we all know, today’s university students are mainly those born in the 1990s. They are lack of necessary physical labor and thus badly in need of physical exercise. However, when they were in primary schools or secondary schools, they had to focus on endless school tasks and exams and seldom had time taking exercise. Now that they are in universities, they have more spare time which can be spend in improving their physical conditions. Therefore, universities should shoulder their responsibilities of providing convenience for the students. Secondly, physical activities are conducive to eliminating various kinds of undesirable mood and rebuilding healthy individuality. University is different from high school due to its involvement of other affairs besides study. Thus, college students should learn to deal with different problems by themselves, which subjects them to greater pressure and challenges. Under such circumstances, students are likely to experience feelings of uncertainty, anxiety or depression. Proper physical exercise helps to get rid of negative emotions and teach students to be stronger, more perseverant and confident. Last but not least, physical education in universities helps to popularize lifetime sports — a concept that will eventually become the goal of the human being. In conclusion, universities should attaches great importance to physical education, since for all college students, study is just one of the most important components of higher education.
