Do Computers Make People Isolated? The popularization of computers and the Internet has brought tremendous changes to the life of modern people. Today we can know the latest news all over the world even without going out of our warm and cozy home. There are so many activities that can be handled by computers and the Internet, such as office work, financial management, making friends and entertainment, etc. The computer has become one of the most convenient tools of our world today, while the convenience it brings has made us more reluctant to go out and make face-to-face communication with others. Some people say that computers make people isolated. However, I can’t totally agree with the idea for the following reasons. In the first place, many young people are addicted to computers and the Internet, and become the so-called Net potatoes who may feel their computers are the most attractive in the world. The development of science and technology is a double-edged sword, which inevitably has negative effects. For example, people are more willing to sit in front of the screen instead of going out and doing physical exercises. They chat online, but feel shy and embarrassed whenever communicating with people in their real life. They feel confident, eloquent and wise when typing their keyboards and manipulating their mouses, but the opposite when talking with someone in reality. The attractive virtual world makes us have fewer opportunities for social activities, thus, we’re isolated from the world outside our houses. In the second place, however, it is not the computer that makes people isolated in a deep sense. Although online chatting and communications are incomplete for the lack of emotional expressions and using of body languages, they have provided us with more opportunities to get in touch with people from all walks of society. Today, we can become friends with people who may have no interaction with our life, which used to be impossible without computers. We have the access to freely expressing our own opinions online, and this is also an important skill in communication. All in all, the reason why we’re more isolated is a mixture of social changes, and the computer is not the only cause. The accelerated life pace and increased work load are all responsible for our feeling of isolation. In fact, in the current environment, we’ll feel even more isolated without computers and the Internet.
