Singapore is one of the world’s smallest countries but it is also one of the most successful countries. Its economic growth has averaged 8.9 percent for the past 30 years. It is the world’s second-busiest seaport and third-largest oil refining centre.
    It prospers as a regional financial centre, a major electronics manufacturer and a huge attraction for tourists—6 million in 1994. Foreign reserves total more than $56 billion.
    Singaporeans enjoy the highest standard of living in South East Asia and the second best in all of Asia, after Japan. A recent US embassy report said the "quality of life in Singapore has reached developed country standards."
    The air is not polluted, the water is pure and lush tropical greenery lines the reads. Trash is collected from every house every’ day, and more than 90 percent of the population owns their own apartments.
