In recent years, the number of vegetarians is on the rise in China. Many Chinese people now do not eat meat or fish not because they cannot afford but because they choose to do that in respect of animals. In addition to protecting animals, there are quite a few benefits of vegetarianism. Write an essay of about 400 words on the following topic:
The Benefits of Vegetarianism

答案
The Benefits of Vegetarianism According to a news report, in UK roughly 5% of its people are vegetarians and they choose not to consume animal products voluntarily. Likewise, the trend of vegetarianism in China is gradually prominent. The increasing popularity of vegetarianism demonstrates that the benefits of vegetarianism are multiple. As far as I see it, there are two main advantages— environmentally-friendly and healthy. First of all, being a vegetarian is a friendly gesture to the environment As is known to industrial practitioners, to acquire a large area of land for farming purpose, one needs to cut down trees to make room for animal husbandry. Besides, the livestock farming also produces greenhouse gas, the leading cause of ozone depletion This is supported by a recent U.N. report, saying that as much as 18% of the planet’s greenhouse gas emission is from the farming industry. A third threat of meat consumption is the potential waste of water resources. For example, it takes 100,000 litres of water to produce a kilogram of beef, while producing the same amount of potatoes merely takes 500 litres of water. If more people choose to become vegetarians, the demand of meat will be immediately reduced As a result, deforestation, greenhouse gas emission and water waste will be subsequently curbed in the farming industry. Furthermore, vegetarianism is also a healthy way of living. Meat consumption is unhealthy in that meat contains a large quantity of cholesterol, which is highly likely to cause blocked arteries and heart diseases. What makes matters worse is the risk of getting cancer from eating meat. On the contrary, a vegetarian diet is much healthier, because the main ingredients are vitamin, fiber, protein and mineral. It is low in fat and thus able to reduce the risk of heart diseases and cancers. It has been reported that a professional medical organization in America advises Americans to rule out red meat from their diets due to its harm. Moreover, if you are a weight watcher, a vegetarian diet is also a good choice for you, because it can prevent you from being overweight or obese. In conclusion, the main benefits of vegetarianism are twofold: externally, it is environmentally-friendly; internally, it does good to our body and makes us healthy. Thus it is fair to say that vegetarian diet every day keeps the pollution at bay and the doctor away.
