I’d say that’s pretty simple. In China, success is measured almost entirely by how much money and power you have. It’s very important to have both. I know some people who have one but not the other and they are not regarded as successful. For example, I know a government official who is very good at his job, but he is not respected or regarded as successful because he is not very rich. I think this is a great injustice. Well, to be rich and powerful. A minority of people have other aims—to be good people, to help others and to be of use to society—but most people ... they have more selfish aims. I can’t really blame the more selfish people too much—they want to make sure, for example, that their children have the best possible start in life and they want to live comfortably. I think it’s natural for people to want those things. It only makes me angry when they put those desires too far ahead of the desire to be good citizens. Mainly, people try to achieve these goals through being the best at work. They try to negotiate the biggest contracts, achieve the highest sales figures or find ways of improving efficiency. However, as in all societies, there are people who try to get what they want through less honourable means. As a journalist, I believe that it is one of my responsibilities to expose such people. To be honest, not really. Although there are many people trying to achieve these goals, the amount of competition is not very high because a lot of people are not talented enough to reach high levels of achievement. It’s not necessarily their fault. They are not provided with quality education. That’s one reason why I want to go abroad to study for a while. By going abroad, I hope to learn things that my competitors do not know, giving me an advantage. Many Chinese people would answer that the most ambitious people are the ones who are most likely to succeed. I disagree. Having ambition is part of it, but I think that the ones who are most likely to succeed are the ones who are able to think creatively rather than just following everyone else. If you simply follow someone else, it stands to reason that you will always be behind. Successful people are also prepared to take risks and expend time and money on their projects.
