答案 As can be seen from the above chart, some important changes have taken place in the past years with regard to the average age of first marriage in a big city in China. It increased from 22.66 years old in 1980 to 23.98 in 1990, and then to 27.02 in 2000. It is no difficult job for us to come up with some possible factors that underlie those interesting changes. In the first place, with the competition becoming increasingly fierce, more and more young people have changed their lifestyles and they wish to embark on an ideal career before taking marriage into consideration. Therefore, marriage is no longer the single most important thing for young people. In the second place, many young people become more and more independent. They strive to find their ideal partners, and it usually takes longer for both parties to adapt to each other. Thus they often delay their marriage. From what has been discussed so far, I think that the change of marriage age is a clear reflection of fundamental social changes in the past years. When people are anxious to claim a higher and more independent life, they are likely to marry later. And it can be predicted that the present situation will continue for quite a while in the near future.
