Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid has granted amnesty to thousands of prisoners to mark Christmas and the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. Indonesia’ s justice minister says the president signed a decree Thursday releasing 105 political prisoners Most of the prisoners were separatists from Aceh and Han Jaya province. The justice minister says President Wahid also reduced the jailed terms of 3,800 convicted criminals. He says some 3,800 prisoners therefore could be freed because the reduced sentences would wipe out their remaining jail terms. Justice Ministry officials say the amnesty is part of the government efforts to release all those who are jailed for political activity under Indonesia’ s former authoritarian government.
