Health workers in West Africa are wrapping up a massive campaign to vaccinate people against yellow fever. The week-long UN-sponsored drive targeted 12 million people in Benin, Liberia and Sierra Leone. (6) The group’s head, July Andy says this campaign against yellow fever has reached deeper into Liberian communities because it has had the backing of both traditional and religious leaders.
    "We talked to the leaders, they pledged their support. We visited the Muslim community. We asked them for their support and they pledged their support. We asked the Christian community and they pledged their support", says July Andy. The three countries are among 13 in Africa considered at high risk for outbreaks of yellow fever. The disease is spread by mosquitoes and kills more than 30, 000 people each year.
