I’d like to talk about the advice I got from my father in my teens. One evening, I was sitting right next to my father and watching a quiz show on the TV which I was very fond of. Suddenly, my father asked me about my school. That was kind of an embarrassing topic to talk about since my exam results had been quite disappointing. He then told me some inter esting stories of his childhood, mostly about how he felt about school, study and other stuff. My father has a natural talent for telling compelling stories. I was so amazed to learn that I was very much like him. We both had more passion for playing, hanging out with friends than studying. Then he explained to me the significance of working hard on my study. He said my academic performance would determine my future. At first, I took this advice lightly. However, when he told me how he had changed himself and achieved excellence in his study, and how that later helped him land a career he had always dreamed of, I took it very seriously. What dumbfounded me much was that I didn’t feel like I was being lectured then. Instead, I was really captivated by the idea that my academic excellence can someday make me the person I want to be. I did have a dream about my future and my father’s advice made it clear that my dream would be out of reach unless I worked hard on my study. I won’t say I’ve been excellent in my study since then, but things could have been quite different for me if I hadn’t received the advice in proper time. This is why I consider it the best advice I’ve ever received. It grew my interest in reading and learning and that’s the best part in my life so far.
