A prefix is attached before a base (as in dislike and inexperienced) ; a suffix after a base (as in freedom and friendly). (3)Conversion, a very productive way of producing new words in English, is "the derivational process whereby an item is adapted or converted to a new word class without the addition of an affix." Verbs to nouns: answer, doubt; Nouns to verbs; elbow, hand; Adjectives to verbs: calm, dirty. (4) A blend is a new word formed from parts of two (or possibly more) other words. In some cases, however, blending may produce a compound of a word and part of another.
