M: So you arrived just on time!
W: Yes. (6) So let’s begin discussing what we should do with our group homework?
M: Yes, it says we have to investigate some aspect of the city entertainments.
W: Yeah, we have to design a questionnaire of a sort, and include it in our homework. Am I right?
M: Yes. And we have to write an essay and do a presentation before the whole class.
W: Is it an essay? I thought it was a report.
M: Let me check. Yes, you’re right, it’s a group report and everybody must contribute to it.
W: How long does it have to be? 2 ,000 words, isn’t it?
M: (7) Let me see. The report has to be between 2 ,000 and 2 ,500 words. We have to be responsible for each part of the report individually, but we do the presentation and the investigation as a group.
W: So, have you got any ideas about what our investigation will concern?
M: (8-1) I know one of the other groups is looking at the city library.
W: Yes, (8-2) and one group’s doing the gyms.
M: Um, those ideas are quite enlightening. Can we follow their ideas?
W: I don’t think so. (8-3) But I was wondering about investigating the movies instead.
M: The movies?
W: Yes, we could look at whether people prefer watching movies as their main entertainment for their leisure time, and we could also look at the facilities in the cinemas.
M: Sounds like a good idea! (9-1) We could focus on the cinemas located in those shopping malls and find out other amenities attached to them.
W: (9-2) OK. That makes our investigation easy to complete. So, how should we go about the investigation then?
M: Well, we could make some questionnaires. I can ask the people who visit cinemas regularly and the other two members in our group can do a questionnaire for car drivers.
W: Shouldn’t we write the questionnaires together rather than individually?
M: Yes, that’s what I meant. We can write the questionnaires together, but each of us can be responsible for carrying out the questionnaires individually. Is it okay?
W: Sure.
M: (10) We should use some quantitative data too to make our paper academic. You could count how many people watch movie on weekends and I can collect data on how many of them spend money on related amenities.
W: And we should take some photos and videos while we’re collecting the data. They’ll make our presentation vivid.
M: It sounds good. Okay, well, let’s collect our ideas and think about these questions then.
