He has no alternative but to agree to buy some. To his surprise, a super-sized bean that weighs more than five jin comes into his eyes. Obviously, this kind of bean is a typical example of GM food. The drawing clearly indicates the hot issue these days—GM food. GM food is cultivated through genetic engineering technology, which has been widely used in China. Whenever it comes to this issue, there will spring up various voices. Some hold that this technology can allow crops to become more tolerant to unfavorable factors and thus carry a higher yield, whereas a vast majority of people view GM food as a disaster, for it can do great harm to our health. It is estimated that GM food can cause new diseases immune to antibiotics and increase the cancer risk in people who consume such food. Presently, it remains quite controversial whether transgenic technology is a Pandora’s Box or a new way to develop agriculture, which perhaps may continue for a long time. But for consumers, what’s more important is to esteem their right to know and right to choose during consumption than controversy itself. Therefore it is of great urgency for our country to standardize and perfect the labeling system of GM food.
