W: I see. The first step is simple enough, but could you give us an example of setting up the filter?
M: Yes. Some of the sample filters include Fragrance-free, Climate Change, Animal Welfare and Ingredient Safety—so you can filter based on your most pressing concerns. (6) If you’re primarily worried about the impact a product has on the planet, you can filter by Climate Change, or if you are looking for beauty products that have not been tested on animals, check Animal Welfare.
W: (7-1) What if the product that the customer scans scores badly?
M: (7-2) If the product scores badly, the app will recommend an alternative item that is better for you, your family, your wallet, and our world.
W: Wow, it is just like a green personal assistant.
M: Yes. (8) Besides, the app tracks consumers’ purchases to see how well they fit with their selected values and gives a sort of personal virtue rating. We hope, in this way, the shopper can consume more thoughtfully. Our goal is to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions that reflect their preferences and values. We believe that as more consumers buy better products, retailers and manufacturers face compelling incentives to make products that are safe, environmentally sustainable and produced using ethical sourcing of raw materials and labor.
W: (9-1) But in my opinion consumers rarely change their buying habits, even when confronted with scientific and other data.
M: Yes. (9-2) That is why we have drawn on insights from behavioral economics, which show shoppers can be greatly influenced by peer pressure and by information passed on to them by people they know. The app tries to take advantage of these pressures.
W: Em, that makes some sense but how do you put the idea into practice?
M: The virtue rating will inform a consumer how well they are doing according to the values which they espouse. That measurement gives an incentive to do better. Soon, the rating will be able to be shared with others on social-media sites such as Facebook, which could inspire shoppers to consume more thoughtfully.
W: I see. It sounds reasonable. (10-1) And do you have any future plans for this wonderful app?
M: I am sorry to say that this is a secret but I can expose a little. (10-2) In fact we are planning to turn being a good shopper into an online game in the near future.
W: So that GoodGuide can appeal to the younger generation?
M: You are quite insightful! The younger generation does need some guidance when shopping, but they also need fun.
W: Yes. And they are endowed with strong purchasing power as well. One more question: do you intend to include information about foreign goods in this app in the future?
M: Definitely. But that is a huge project and we need more time to expand and improve.
W: Well, Mr. O’Rourke, thank you very much for staying with us today.
M: My pleasure.
