Advertising in particular relies on targeting specific groups of
readers, and one of the most frequent ways which advertising【S1】______
language addresses a set of readers is by using the direct address
term " you". The French political theorist Louis Althusser has
described the way in which the most people will tend to identify【S2】______
themselves with the addressee when they hear the call " Hey,【S3】______
you!" , even though they may not be the person it is addressed.【S4】______
He calls this phenomenon interpellation, or " hailing" and it has
been a useful way of accounting for the powerful device of direct
address which " position" hearers in many forms of ideological【S5】______
discourse, including advertisements.
In advertising, this use of the interpersonal dimension of
language through direct address is one of the most prominent
devices for target readers. This can be in the form of a statement【S6】______
containing the second personal pronoun " you" or questions【S7】______
implying a potential answerer. Nevertheless, the use of imperatives【S8】______
such as " Just do it," which are called directives, is another way
in which advertisements draw in the interpersonal dimension of【S9】______
language. Directives are a category of speech acts which involve
the speaker requesting, instructing or ordering a designating hearer【S10】______
or group of hearers to do something. In advertising discourse,
directives again create that interpersonal link between the text and
the reader.
