Tomorrow was his girlfriend’s birthday and John was having a difficult time deciding on a gift for her. She already had more clothes than she knew what to do with. She didn’t like sweet things. What then? It was important for him to give her just the right gift, because tomorrow he was going to tell her that he wanted to marry (娶) her.
At last he decided on perfume (香水). That raised another problem, however. What kind did she like best? He couldn’t ask her because that would take away the surprise.
Soon John got an idea. That afternoon he took his girlfriend’s dog out. Together they went to the town’s biggest store. There was a lot of perfume. He told a shop assistant to open a large number of bottles and put the stoppers under the dog’s nose.
The dog suddenly became excited (兴奋的) as the shop assistant put one stopper under its nose.
"I’11 take that one," said John. It was very expensive, but it was worth it.
"My favorite perfume!" said the girl the next evening. "How did you know?" she asked.
"Love," said John, thinking that it wasn’t wrong to tell a lie at the moment.
