The magnitude 8. 0 quake struck the South Pacific nation at about 7:40 local time. It was centered about 350 kilometers northwest of the Solomon’s capital, Honiara, at a depth of ten kilometers. Charles Stennet from the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporations says the island of Gizo was hit hard.
