Man: Good morning, everyone. Thank you for inviting me here today. My name’s Patrick Greene, and I’ve had quite an interesting and varied career.
I actually spent nearly ten years as an actor before I went into business with a friend. We set up a training company. As you can imagine, that brought me into contact with a lot of different organisations, and I soon realised that new employees were often asked to give talks very early in their career, and that it was something they found extremely difficult. As a result, I sold my share of the business and started my current company, which is called Star Consultants.
We offer courses in public speaking - they’re designed for graduates. My acting experience was very useful, and I had some coaching myself before I started courses for other people. There is a great need in companies for staff who can communicate well, and I can help people to feel confident about those skills.
There are two main courses I offer. The first is called ’Giving Presentations’. I actually help with the technical side of things, as well as the necessary speaking skills. The other course there is a great demand for is called ’Promoting Products’, and I do a lot of training in this, too.
The first part of any course is always voice work. I spend a lot of time getting people to produce a good, clear sound that an audience can hear easily. I then move on to how to speak with a microphone, since nearly all of my trainees have to use one. We then do a lot of practice, and trainees help each other.
The final part of the course then looks at different things, like how to deal with problems and how to time a talk.
Now, I’ve got a video here to show you of one of my courses in action . . .
