On Banning English Words in Chinese News We have to admit that it is annoying when someone includes one or two English words in their talk for no practical reason. And media surely is playing an important role in setting examples for our society as to how language should be used. Then it should not be a problem for us to understand the rationale behind such a policy, which requires that in Chinese language news, any English words, especially abbreviations, should be followed by a Chinese explanation. For example, when NBA is included in a news item, the Chinese explanation should be given right after that. With the rapid development of international communication and the increasing popularity of English as a universally accepted language in many fields, it would be inevitable for some English words to get into almost all different languages. And usually those people who tend to include some English are doing so in order to show off. We can not deny the fact that this is a group of people who normally receive a good education, hold a promising profession and earn a comfortable income. So it is a sign of superiority for them to show off their English proficiency, then when increasing number of people are doing that, it is only natural for such a trend to make its way around in television programs. But we should never forget that television programs, especially the news programs of our national television, should aim at making themselves understood by the general public, regardless of their foreign language literacy. Then, we should understand the necessity of such a policy to be adopted. But we should also be aware of some of the difficulties in carrying out such a policy. Just as mentioned earlier, English is so widely accepted in so many fields that sometimes we automatically eliminate the process of finding a Chinese version for some words. So how can we find Chinese words to explain MP3, DVD and so on? Still, when we try to figure out the Chinese expressions for some new English words, we are trying to understand some possibilities for our society at the same time. Since English is used in those more developed nations than us, it would give us some hints to some social trends in advance. Take "road rage" for example, it is difficult for us to understand it when we first get to know it, but nowadays, with the increasing car ownership and the pressure people experience in their work and daily life, it has become a common phenomenon, and the Chinese term that literally translated "the rage on the road" is generally accepted as a new word in our language. So it could save our trouble to create a new word as the words have already been invented in other languages. Consequently, it is acceptable and reasonable to ban English words in news broadcast, whereas, we should also know the inconvenience it brings and we have no need to stop enjoying the convenience of English words in daily life.
