Write about the following topic:
Some people think that the government should decide the subject for students to study in university. Others believe that students should be allowed to apply for the subject they prefer.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Education has been universally deemed an indispensable part of individual and social progress; opinions, however, vary as to whether the major students study should be determined by the authority or by learners themselves. Advocates of courses decided by the government argue that a country benefits more from the compulsory option. It is commonly acknowledged that different nations, or even a nation at different stages demands experts or specialists of different fields. In this sense, subjects and course contents selected by the government help universities and colleges to better prepare qualified graduates who will contribute to the economic and social development of their respective country. Another favourable argument is that the authority has a clear picture of the labour market and tends to prepare a competitive workforce for corresponding sectors. There are, however, others who hold that students should be given full freedom to decide the subject of their undergraduate study. Undeniably, individual students have different interests; depriving of their right to choose the subject they are interested in will demotivate them and stifle their creativity if the required subjects do not suit their interest. By contrast, self-selected courses encourage students to fully explore their academic potential and better prepare them for the profession they aspire to, which is beneficial to individual well-being. My own view is that students should have the right to figure out what they want to learn at university, which better serves the individual need, even though courses chosen by the government may address the social need more specifically. It is, however, recommended that the government make available a wider range of subjects so that students can choose the most suitable one as their academic pursuit.
