A Shopping Mall Will Benefit Us a Lot 胡江 It has been recently suggested that a large shopping mall be built in our neighborhood. Some people doubt that it is a feasible idea, and some even strongly oppose it. In my opinion, however, a shopping mall is quite necessary, because it can benefit both our city and the residents. People who oppose the idea have two arguments. One is that the existing two supermarkets arc sufficient to meet the needs of the residents. A new shopping mall will not make a profit and will simply waste our valuable resources. The other argument is that the presence of the mall will disturb the residents’ serene life. For one thing, the increased number of people and cars may cause high-level noises. Busy goods and human flows may also result in traffic jam. Besides, the community’s environmental sanitation and protection will also suffer. Despite the problems it may bring, my suggestion is that building a mall in the neighborhood will be beneficial in a number of ways. The first beneficiary of this mall will be our city. A large shopping mall will stimulate people’s consumption, which will in turn speed up the city’s economic development. Besides, it will produce more job opportunities for those laid-off workers, so the unemployment rate can be considerably reduced. Moreover, a large shopping mall will help to improve the city’s image. The imposing buildings, the hustle and bustle of business life and the prosperity it brings will make the mall a landmark of our city. What is more, a shopping mall will be beneficial to the residents of the community. A large shopping mall contains various stores, businesses and even restaurants. Since nearly all kinds of goods for everyday use are available, the local residents will be relieved of the trouble to buy what they need in different places. Also, a mall often means more stores selling identical goods, the customers will be offered a greater variety and thus a better choice. Moreover, more stores also mean. a keener competition, which hopefully will bring the prices down. So the benefits of a large shopping mall are multifold. All things considered, building a shopping mall in our neighborhood is both sensible and feasible, since it will be beneficial to both our city and the local residents. Although it may bring a number of drawbacks, such as disrupting the environment, its advantages will definitely outweigh its disadvantages.
