Todd Benjamin, CNN Anchor:European Union lawmakers have set their sights on the food industry.Manufacturers have been given a deadline to stop advertising junk food to children.Brussels is threatening to introduce legislation if they don’t comply amid concerns over rising obesity levels in Europe. But as Diana Muriel reports, bad habits die hard.
Diana Muriel, CNN Correspondent:Working Mum Vicky Whitehouse has decided on a treat for her family this Friday lunch time.Just around the corner from her Derbyshire home in the north of England, is a drive-through McDonald’s.A nurse in a big city hospital, Vicky knows the value of wholesome, home-cooked food for the family. But one-year-old Theo doesn’t.Although, as Vicky points out, it’s not so much the food her children care about.
Vicky Whitehouse, Mother:I think really it’s the toys that come with it.I think as soon as children walk into places like this, the big display of toys will appeal to them Toys such as Barbie and Action Man are always positioned near the counter so you’ve got to walk past them to actually order the food.
Muriel:Experts like Professor Tim Lang of London City University say the Whitehouse family are simply victims of ruthless industry.
Tim Lang, London City University: The food industry is targeting more and more fatty sugary foods at children.Children are not given proper guidelines by their parents. The marketing industry does brilliant, very witty, very sophisticated advertisements. And the net effect is a I rapid change in food culture.
Muriel:But it’s this kind of culture European lawmakers are eager to reform.European food manufacturers and retails have been given one year to stop advertising junk food to children and improve labeling. If they don’t, then new legislation could force them to comply. Some manufacturers aren’t waiting for legal action.Kraft Foods announced a change in global policy earlier this month. It will stop marketing products like its Oreo cookies to children from now on.But much of the rest of the industry invests millions of dollars each year to convince kids to consume their products using takeaway toys to increase sales. The result has been an explosion in childhood obesity across the region and fatty food is a hidden killer.
Lang:If they get fat, very quickly their arteries start clogging up and diseases one would expect them to die of in very old age start appearing younger.Diabetes, strokes, cardiovascular diseases start getting laid down very early. And that’s why everyone is now worried. We have for the first time, epidemiological evidence that the children may die before their parents.
Muriel:Vicky is careful to restrict the amount of junk food her kids eat.And she doesn’:t like the taste of it, herself. But so far, the rest of Europe shows little sign of losing its appetite for fast food and it may take a change in the law to tackle the problem.
