Such old buildings remind us not only of our history, but also of our tradition and culture. It is hard to imagine pulling down these precious buildings at the foolish excuse of modernization. In addition, historic sites have great attraction for tourists from home and abroad, which can significantly boost the tourism of a city. For instance, many foreign tourists are prone to visit Xi’an and Beijing, where many historic constructions are well preserved. Moreover, before knocking down an old building, people should first study its aesthetic and architectural value—apart from historical events with which it might be associated. A building might be one of only a few that represent a certain architectural style. Or it might be especially beautiful, perhaps as a result of the craftsmanship or certain materials employed in its construction. The striking examples are the old for- eign-style buildings in Qingdao and Harbin. With special aesthetic values, these buildings are greatly appreciated by both Chinese and foreigners. In conclusion, we should make sure that the old buildings to be destroyed are really devoid of historic, aesthetic and architectural value. Old buildings do not necessarily mean useless buildings. As for those still valuable old constructions, we should try every effort to protect them, for once destroyed, they will be unretrievable forever .
