But in map 2, it has been reduced to less than a third of the area in 2002. Another change that is worth mentioning is that in map 1, the desert only covers a small part, which is about one fourth or even less. By contrast, it is clear that in map 2 it covers more than one third. Some parts of the forests, grassland, rivers and lakes are desertified. If we do not take these alarming maps into consideration, what would we leave to our future generations? It is urgent to preserve the arable land and prevent the desertification of our land. Firstly, we should take care of forests and grassland, harness rivers and plant trees, which will curb the expanding of the desert. Secondly, improper policies should be revised. Some government poverty relief programs often encourage the poor to plow grassland and steep hills to plant more crops. The results are disastrous. Thirdly, the construction of resident houses and factories should not go unchecked. This is a task for policy makers and common folks alike. Judging from all the evidence offered, we may reasonably draw the conclusion that we should take great efforts to preserve our cultivable land, not only for ourselves, but also for future generations.
