Should Life Be Saved at the Cost of Others’? It is a traditional virtue in China to help those who are in need, and it is the reflection of great and noble humanity to save a life at the cost of one’s own. Those who have the courage and consciousness to do this are always considered as heroes and examples for the public to follow. However, more and more people argue that all lives are equal and nobody should sacrifice themselves to save another one. In my opinion, the spirit of self-sacrifice is worthy for us to learn, but we should find the most appropriate way to avoid casualty as well. First, everyone’s life is precious. Whenever somebody is in danger, as long as we have the ability to rescue the life, it is natural for us to give them a hand. However, it is unwise to take action when we are not capable of protecting ourselves. For instance, if somebody is drowning, someone good at swimming can choose to go directly and save his life, while those who cannot swim will only make things worse to jump into the water. The best choice then is to find some useful tools or call the police for help immediately. The professionals are definitely more efficient than us, and the loss can be reduced to the least level. It is irreproachable to choose our own lives when we can’t guarantee the safety of ourselves. Second, there are too many stories about young and promising people sacrifice their own lives to save others who encountered accidents or committed suicide. There’s a furious debate on whether it is worthy to save a life at the cost of a more valuable one. Sometimes, the saved one even behaves badly and refuses to give any appreciation, let alone compensation, to the family of the savior. However, it is difficult for us to measure the risks at the emergent moment. The rescuers, even professionals cannot expect the accidents during the process of rescuing, and what the final cost will be. Thus, the choices of the heroes are respectable, no matter what the outcomes may be. In conclusion, we should study the noble spirit and action of those who sacrifice themselves to save others. However, we should also try our best to find the most appropriate way. Anyway, nobody wants to see the loss of life.
