答案 Are Children Brought up in Poor Families Better Prepared for Problems in Adult Life? It is one of the most valuable traits that we as human beings are capable of finding patterns in things. That being the case, we run the risk of overgeneralization. "Westerners don’t respect nature," we hear people say, or "girls are not good at science," or "English majors can hardly get a job." It is easy to realize that such statements are biased and often based on stereotypes. However, as it turns out, we generally don’t have the same enthusiasm in examining those statements as in creating them. In my opinion, the comment that children who are brought up in families that do not have large amounts of money are better prepared to deal with the problems of adult life than children brought up by wealthy parents is but another example of these "unexamined" thoughts, and of how we fall into the trap of overgeneralization. The problem lies in how to define "the problems of adult life". Cooking? Socializing? Getting married? Raising a Child? Let’s get realistic and admit that everyone, as he becomes an adult, is faced with tons of problems. And no one, no matter how rich or poor the family he is brought up in is, could be fully prepared for the problems. Because of our diverse backgrounds, each of us has certain strengths and weaknesses. It is possible that someone who grows up in a rich family performs confidently when he plays the piano, yet becomes clumsy when he cooks a supper for himself. It is also quite possible that a poor guy, being excellent in bargaining, is completely at a loss for words referring to funds and stocks. Family wealth does not decide whether the child will become capable or incapable. It is education and individual efforts that ultimately make the distinction. One may be better at coping with difficulties in his life if he is positive, diligent and educated, regardless of the financial state of his family of origin. Confucius and Socrates are both from poor families, while Buddha and Aristotle are from rich families. Nonetheless, all of them succeeded in dealing with their own problems in their adult lives. Considering the statement above, I totally agree with the idea that family wealth can not decide one’s capability of solving problems.
