I remember the day of a debate contest in my senior year, it was a really stressful one. The contest started at 2 in the afternoon but I got up at 7 in the morning to prepare for it. Actually I didn’t sleep well the previous night, worrying about what would go wrong the next day. All kinds of debate topics filled my head. So I kept reading my notes, watching debate videos and writing arguments. Unfortunately, I couldn’t concentrate at all because of the disturbing noise from the nearby road. In the end I threw all the paperwork away and turned to trivial things that might dispel my nerves, such as ironing my suit and listening to music. After a brief lunch, I went to the stadium early to rehearse. My classmates were very supportive. They all came to cheer me. But it kinda made me feel more stressed, because no one wants to fail before friends. I secretly told myself to forget about them and focus on the stage. The debate contest followed British Parliament model and my role was the Prime Minister, which meant I was the first to speak and must explain the motion clearly. All the contestants were only given 5 minutes to prepare. I felt sweat all over my body when the motion was announced. It was about national medical care, a topic I didn’t know very well. I thought I would get a panic attack, but luckily I overcame my fear after all. The contest went smoothly and I got the third prize in the end. Despite the great stress, generally speaking, I did enjoy the day.
