According to latest psychological research, appearance does affect people’s judgment. It takes only one-tenth of a second to decide whether a stranger is trustworthy, important or attractive. Actually, more than a half of the judgment on impression is purely from appearance.(9)Research has shown that, when we see a new face, our judgment on the person will be directly affected by macroscopic features, such as shape of jaw, mouth and eyes. Tom, from York University in England, and his colleagues analyzed macroscopic features of 1 000 facial images with sharp distinction. They also carried out assessment on social features of each face shape. These composite facial images are good illustrations that changes of facial features represent the differences of typical social characteristics.(10)The researcher integrated 65 appearance properties such as eyebrow width and mouth size so as to construct a model that can explain the reason why the first impression of more than a half of the judgment solely lie in macroscopic features. For example, the shape and size of mouth is linked to one’s kindness,(11)and eyes’ shape and size is related to one’s charm. In reverse, the author created a new model. Specific impressions that met writer’s hope could be generated in audience’s brain through cartoon images produced by the model. Such result implied that the objective external features are the basis of forming social impression. Psychologist wrote in the article: "To understand first impression originating from face is the theme theory research. In the mean time, it is of great significance in practice, and particularly its wide application in social media has enhanced the importance of this theme."
9. What will directly affect people’s judgment when they see a new face?
