Until modern times, no one knew what comets (彗星)were. They were described as things bring tragedy (悲剧). The 【B1】 word" comet " comes from the Greek " Kometes ", 【B2】 means "the long-haired one". The Greeks 【B3】 Romans believed that comets were evil spirits with flowing beards. In the Middle Ages, the Church decided that comets were sent by God to punish man for 【B4】 sins (wrong doings).
The comet 1531 was once 【B5】 to be "the color of blood". An ugly evil spirit 【B6】 long hair rode at its head. It looked so horrible and produced such terror in the common people that 【B7】 died of fear and others fell sick.
People believed it 【B8】 late into the seventeenth century, 【B9】 the English astronomer Edmund Halley noticed a similarity in the paths of 【B10】 comets of 1456, 1531, 1607, and 1683. Halley 【B11】 that these comets were 【B12】 and the same comet coming down round and 【B13】 the sun like a planet. He 【B14】 that this comet would 【B15】 about the end of 1785 or early in 1759, 【B16】 it had been sighted regularly every seventy-five or six years.
Halley himself did not live long 【B17】 to see his comet return. 【B18】 his prediction proved to be correct, 【B19】 on March12, 1759, a comet was seen across the sky. This was the first time in history that a comet had been unquestionably expected. Since 1759, it has 【B20】 three times. The comet is named Halley’s Comet, after the man who correctly predicted its appearance.
