答案 The table compares American and Chinese college students in terms of their financial sources for life and study. Overall, there are substantial differences between them. The Chinese college students are overwhelmingly supported by their parents (90%), and only 10% of them are self-sponsored either by part-time jobs or scholarships. In contrast to their Chinese counterparts’ reliance on parents, American students are more independent. More than half of the students (55%) rely on themselves for money and among which 40% of them take part-time jobs. Several factors may account for such differences. Firstly, the idea of self-sponsoring does not align with the exam-oriented educational system in China, and therefore it is highly possible to be condemned by not only the parents also the whole society. Americans, however, believe getting high scores and being independent are of the same importance. Secondly, most Chinese families have only one child due to the "one child policy" , thus in most cases parents are able to finance their child, while an American student might not get enough financial support from parents if s/he has siblings. Lastly, American students may get much higher expenditure on education than Chinese students do, and that may account for why 15% of American students get financed by scholarship.
