You will read a short passage, listen to a talk, and answer a question about them. After you hear the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare a response and 60 seconds to record the response.
Now read the letter from the university newspaper about a suggestion to stop serving junk food in the dining hall. You will have 45 seconds to read the letter. Begin reading now.
Stop Serving Junk Food in Dining Hall
The university’s dining hall currently offers many healthy foods but also a lot of unhealthy snacks and junk food, like cookies and potato chips. I think the university should stop serving the unhealthy items and offer only healthier options, like fruits and vegetables. Students would benefit from the change in two ways. First, they’d be healthier, because they’d eat lots of nutritious food. Also, students would save money. Many students buy unhealthy snacks and desserts, like ice cream, even if they’re full after a meal—but with the new plan, they would no longer waste money on food that they really didn’t need.
Sincerely,
Mary Jacobs
Now listen to two students discussing the letter.
The man expresses his opinion about the letter writer’s proposal. Briefly summarize the proposal, then state the man’s opinion and explain the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.
Now listen to two students discussing the letter.
W: Did you see Mary’s letter in the paper?
M: Yeah, but I totally disagree with her.
W: Yeah?
M: Yeah! I think what she proposes is kind of unnecessary. I mean most of us are healthy enough. We should be able to have a little junk food from time to time if we want.
W: I’m with you there.
M: I mean eating it occasionally is not going to hurt us.
W: I agree. Just keep it in moderation.
M: Like toward the end of the semester, when everybody’s studying and finishing their papers and stuff…
W: Sure! Times like that it’s nice to have a treat like ice cream.
M: And the argument about the money?
W: Well that seems to make sense, doesn’t it?
M: I don’t think so. If we can’t buy it here, we’re just going to go to a store off campus and it’s more expensive there.
W: That’s true.
M: Yep. I mean, we’re going to buy this stuff occasionally, right? So, it’ll end up costing us more money by forcing us to go to an off-campus store, which is the opposite effect from what the letter says.

答案
In the student’s letter, Mary Jacobs suggests that the dining hall on campus should stop serving unhealthy food. Mary lists two benefits of this proposed change. First, students will be healthier if they can only buy healthy food in the cafeteria. Second, students will save money if they stop buying unhealthy snacks and desserts after a meal. The man expresses an opposite opinion on this proposal. He believes that students will need some unhealthy food in stressful times. And moderate intake of unhealthy food is not harmful to students. Besides, he thinks that this proposal won’t help students save money because they’ll then purchase the unhealthy food in stores outside the campus. And this will cost more than their counterparts in the dining hall. Overall, the man concludes that this proposal won’t achieve its intended purpose.
