Nowadays, more and more young people tend to celebrate western traditional festivals, such as Valentine’s Day, Christmas. Are Western festivals undermining Chinese culture? The following are the supporters’ and opponents’ opinions. Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue.
YES
As Western festivals become increasingly popular among young people, they tend to get confused between Western festivals and traditional Chinese festivals for lack of the recognition of their own cultural identity. For example, a pupil once absurdly mistook the statue of Confucius as Santa Claus.
With foreign media infiltrating into people’s daily life through various social networks, western cultures are even accepted as the dominant moral values by some young people.
NO
Indeed, there are an increasing number of people going for Western festivals. But that doesn’t mean every one of them has a thorough understanding of the cultural backgrounds behind these festivals. While for Chinese people who are deep rooted in Chinese culture, they know very much about the origins of traditional Chinese festivals.
Recent years have witnessed more and more regulations and laws to protect the Chinese traditional festivals, for example, Tomb-sweeping Day and Mid-autumn Day have been legalized as national holidays.

答案
Will Western Festivals Undermine Chinese Culture? In recent years, an increasing number of young people have been fascinated to celebrate western festivals, such as Valentine’s Day and Christmas. Some people are worrying that Chinese culture might be undermined by western festivals for lack of their own cultural identity. And the increasingly important role western festivals play in Chinese people’s daily life also threatens traditional Chinese festivals. While some believe it won’t happen because Chinese people have a better understanding about their own culture than they know about western culture and national awareness has also been enhanced to protect traditional Chinese culture. First, young people like to celebrate western festivals just because these festivals are fresh and interesting to them. Once they get used to them, they will lose interest in them. While the traditional Chinese festivals will be celebrated no matter whether people are interested or not, because they belong to our own culture. Second, our country has set these traditional Chinese festivals as legal holidays so that people can have several days off from their work. People, especially young ones, like to have holidays on which they don’t need to go to school or work. Therefore, they will be counting the days when a traditional Chinese festival is coming and planning how to celebrate the festival. In one word, western festivals will not undermine Chinese culture, but just add some fun into our daily lives.
