答案 Joint Ventures Boost in Beijing Since China opened its door to the outside world in 1979, Beijing has made remarkable results in attracting foreign business to make direct investment in joint ventures. By September 1990, Beijing had approved 798 foreign-invested enterprises, with a total contractual investment of $ 4. 271 billion, including foreign funds of 1. 934 billion. Of the 798 foreign-invested enterprises, 579 are industrial production enterprises. Some 323 foreign-invested enterprises have already gone into production. The investors in the above-mentioned enterprises come from 26 countries and regions. Hong Kong investment ranks first, accounting for 44 per cent of the total. Japan’s investment makes up 19. 2 per cent, putting it in second spot. Third is the United States at 16 per cent. From January to August, 1990, the total industrial output value of the enterprises was $ 644 million, their total sales were $ 730 million, and their export and domestic income in foreign exchange $ 210 million. These figures represent increase of 30%, 42%, 50% respectively on the same period of 1989. China’s market is very large and offers great potential. Beijing enjoys the same preferential policies as coastal cities open to the outside world. As the capital, Beijing enjoys unique advantages, and it will make greater efforts to further improve the investment environment and run the present foreign-invested enterprises efficiently.
