Universities are crucial in the educational system. Unlike primary schools and secondary schools, universities allow students more freedom and greater flexibility to choose subjects and study by themselves. Thus, some people argue that universities should spend more money in improving facilities instead of hiring famous teachers, in my opinion, I do not agree with this proposition. I think an excellent faculty is the key of quality education. As mentioned earlier, college students take more initiative to study subjects they like. This may be the main reason why some people hold the opinion that most investment should go to facility improvement. Good facilities would provide students with a favorable environment to explore what they are interested in. I agree that good facilities are important for a university. However, the benefits of being equipped with good facilities are outweighed by the value created by pre-eminent teachers. As a former president of Tsinghua University said, "big buildings do not make good universities, masters do." The wealth of knowledge that first-class teachers create and leave to their students is unparalleled. To begin with, outstanding teachers can provide insightful guidance to students. Even though college students have developed stronger autonomous learning ability than secondary students, the importance of supervision and guidance should not be neglected. For instance, searching for suitable books aimlessly in a library may be time-consuming for students. Good teachers can provide a list of references based on their experience and expertise and offer students the most effective way to access relevant knowledge. Furthermore, good teachers are an inspiration to their students. The ways good teachers work and do research and the attitude they exhibit towards truth and science would be invaluable assets for students. With an excellent faculty, students are more likely to be influenced in a positive way, which cannot be replaced by facilities improvement. Looking back in history, we can find that many successful scientists actually worked in unfavorable conditions. Their success and achievements are inseparable from the guidance and inspiration of their teachers. This topic also has relevance to today’s education. What should also draw our attention is that there seems to be a trend for universities to advertise their facilities such as beautiful and smart buildings, libraries and even dormitories to attract students, in my perspective, investing in teachers can generate more value and it is a key to quality education.
