Here are some examples: Some people say we live in a "dog-eat-dog world" which means many people are competing for the same things. They also say that a person has to "work like a dog" if he wants to succeed, so "work like a dog" here means to work very hard. Still, people say "Every dog has its day." This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. If a man tells you that he is "in the doghouse", he might has been punished by his wife. However, the husband may decide that it is best to leave things alone and not to cause more trouble. He might decide "to let sleeping dogs lie".
    Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. "The dog days of summer" refers to the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather, but "to rain cats and dogs" is not what we want.
