. Have mobile phones changed much over the past decades? Yes. The invention of touch screens signaled a great change in mobile phones. In the past, mobile phones had a physical keyboard, but today people can use a virtual keyboard on their touch screen. What’s more, a mobile phone was once used only for making phone calls. Now a smartphone can serve as a multifunctional device. . How different are the TV programmes you watch today from those you watch 10 years ago? Oh, there’s a huge difference. 10 years ago I was a TV junkie. I watched all sorts of TV programmes every day, especially TV series about love stories, and I spent lots of time on it. But now, things have changed greatly. I only watch TV news and don’t do it very often. . What kinds of music are popular with young people in your culture? I suppose most young people in China like pop music very much. Pop music is usually about people’s emotions and lives, so young people may find the songs related to their own lives. They could also sing the popular songs, which is a very good way to relax. There’re a lot of singing competitions in China and you can see most participants are young people. And the songs they choose are mostly pop songs. Besides pop music, I also think classical music is becoming increasingly fashionable among young people because more and more of them take piano or violin classes. . Are there any jobs that you think are unfairly paid? Why do you think that? Yes, I think the working value of housewives is severely underestimated. More than unfairly paid, housewives aren’t paid at all! You may argue that being a housewife isn’t a job, but there’s no denying that housework requires labour, intelligence and skills and definitely has a market value that is worth hundreds of thousands of yuan per year. Housewives have to do all kinds of housework on a daily basis. This role is vital for a family, so housewives should be paid. Proposals like contract marriage or government special subsidy were once made in some regions in the world to fight for housewives’ pay cheques. I really think the society should figure out some ways to financially recognize every family’s unsung heroines. . Do you think that government should spend more money improving public transport in rural areas in your country? Why? Definitely yes. There’re more poor and left. behind regions in the west of China than in the east because high lands and mountains there hinder the development of transport, and further hold back their economy and urbanization. It’s only the government that can take on the role in planning and coordinating massive projects like public transport, and mobilizing huge funds to build large. scale infrastructure. What’s more, cheap and affordable public transport suits the need of the lower income rural residents. With more roads and railways, the living conditions in rural areas could be improved quickly and more resources could be delivered in while more produce be transported out. . Do you think it’s best to do new things on your own or with other people? Why? Well, it depends. In fact, I don’t have a clear. cut answer for this question. I think some new things can be fun when you do it on your own and others are fun when you do it with other people. For example, if you always travel with your family or friends, it feels good if you try travelling on your own for a couple of times. But if you are trying something risky or dangerous, like extreme sports, it would be more enjoyable when you do it with other people. You can share the excitement with each other. . Should the government or individual people pay for the services available to the people in a community? I think the government should pay for some of the services that are available to the people in a community. For example, the system of social work should be established to provide some services, such as helping old people or victims of domestic violence. I think the government should pay for the essential services that are related to people’s basic needs and well. being. But I think it’s not necessary for the government to pay for all the services in a community. Individuals should also take responsibility. For example, there can be some kind of fee. paying childcare service in the community.
