At present, TV programs are replete with all kinds of advertisements where there is a great deal of seemingly true information. As many other consumers, I think the government has the responsibility to censor these advertisements so that we can have the reliable information on which to base our decision when making a purchase. It is a sad yet hard fact that a considerable number of advertisements nowadays carry deliberately misleading information. They tend to exaggerate the selling points of their products in order to attract more consumers. For example, in its advertisement, one of the Walkman manufacturers promises its customers excellence in English listening comprehension within 30 days. When seeing this, most people will take for granted that with the help of the Walkman advertised they will be able to be at home in English listening comprehension with 30 short days. But they are wrong! 30 days here may be interpreted as 720 hours. In other words, with this brand of Walkman you can expect to solve your problem in listening comprehension if you keep practicing 2 hours a day for one year. This is of course not what most of the buyers hope for when they decide to make the purchase. It is by this kind of misleading information conveyed in an ad that we are cajoled into paying an unreasonably high price for a product that is not what it is claimed to be. Examples of this kind are too numerous to cite. The seriousness of the situation demands that the government take measures to regulate the contents of business advertisements, First, some special agencies or organizations should be set up to impose rigid censorship on the advertisements before they are allowed to be put on television or newspapers. If so, manufacturers as well as their advertisers would be forced to discipline themselves and present a true picture of their products to their potential customers. Second, some watchdog committees are advised to be established so that if some businesses include deceptive information in the ad they are duly punished and their mistakes put right. Third, the government should strictly forbid the news people to advertise a company and its products or services in the name of a news release. Such measures, if adopted, would not only protect ordinary people from deceit and harm, but would also help make advertisements a beneficial source of information for the general public.
