Not long ago, we Americans had a pretty good idea of what family meant. But today, with people living together in so many different combinations, "family" is much harder to define. When it comes to family values, I find that Americans may be saying one thing and doing another. The real picture is that the American family is suffering a crisis of collapsing.
Is the ideal of a traditional family coming to an end.’? A high divorce rate, an increase in single parent households, a rise in the number of unmarried parents, and growing appearance of homosexual families certainly suggest the American family is no longer what it used to be before the 1970’ s. Despite these trends, many Americans claim that they place the highest value on family life.
If you believe what they say about their values, then families are doing fine. 【62】
In survey after survey, traditional relationships among parents, children, and siblings are identified as the most important aspect of life. Families are seen as more important than work, recreation, friendships, or status.
Researchers have been asking Americans about their families for over half a century, and Americans have always replied that the family takes priority over everything else in their lives.
But if you watch what Americans do, traditional family relationships are in trouble. 【63】
My re search indicates that if current divorce rates continue, about two out of three marriages that begin this year will not survive as long as spouses live.Besides, the proportion of American adults who are married is decreasing, the share of out-of-wedlock births has soared, and most children under age eighteen will spend part of their childhood living with only one parent.
The truth is that many, if not most, Americans will sacrifice traditional family ties for activities which they claim are less important. It is common for Americans to let the pursuit of more individualistic goals interfere with their family life, even when doing so is clearly contrary to their best interests. 【64】
When personal and family goals conflict, many people who express strong support for family values do not live up to those values.

Previous genera fions saw marriage as an institution to be joined and supported. But today, most people value marriage primarily for what they personally can gain from it, n6t for what it does for their children, ex tended family, or community. The ideal of "being married to the same person for life" has given way to the goal of "having a happy marriage".
More and more Americans emphasize materialistic gain and individual achievement. Unfortunately, they are far more materialistic and achievement-oriented than they are willing to admit.
