Marriage: Try Before You Commit Ever since ancient times, marriage is considered to be a sacred enterprise which is meant for lifetime. However, recent decades have witnessed a soaring number of divorces both in China and abroad. Some people suggest that a couple should have a "trial marriage" in the form of cohabitation before they make the solemn decision. As far as I see it, taking cohabitation as a "trial marriage" should be encouraged since it gives more chances for the couple to understand each other and leaves space for reconsideration. First of all, cohabitation can give the couple more opportunities to know each other. When a boy and a girl are dating, they usually present the best side of themselves to leave good impression. The impression, therefore, is one-sided. Details such as living habits and personal characters are somehow hidden. By living together, however, both the boy and the girl would completely show themselves to each other, just like the case after they get married. Questions such as who should do the cooking, the washing and the laundry would be put onto the table. The couple would hence be able to see whether or not they can get along well. All these would be invisible if the two don’t live together. Furthermore, taking cohabitation as a"trial marriage" provides the couple with a chance for reconsideration and even backing out. Marriage means the union of two persons. They are not only supposed to be living with each other for the rest of their lives, but also going to share many things such as their personal properties, their families and perhaps their children. If the decision of a marriage is immature, many problems can arise including emotional and legal ones. Therefore, unless the couple is 100% sure that they are ready for marriage, they should not irresponsibly rush into it. Serving as a "trial marriage", cohabitation helps the couple to better realize whether they are entirely committed and ready to face the routine days after getting married. If they are not, at least they still have the chance to reconsider their decision or even back out before any further harm is caused. As a conclusion, cohabitation acts as a good preparation for marriage. It not only gives the couple more chances to know each other, but also offers space for reconsideration before making the big decision.
