Man: Good morning! Today I am going to give you a lecture on job satisfaction in management. First of all, let us find out what job satisfaction is. Different people have different opinions as to what makes a job "satisfying". The general opinions of theorists such as Maslow and Herzberg give some clues to the factors which lead to people to enjoy their work. Major influences on job satisfaction include the following:
The pay level for a job is clearly important to most people. High levels of pay allow workers to obtain more material possessions: a high wage can also compensate for uncomfortable or dangerous working conditions. Many employees are, however, willing to accept pay levels lower than they could earn elsewhere, since pay is only one of several factors in job satisfaction.
Fringe benefits, or perks, can also influence the level of job satisfaction. Popular perks include company cars, luncheon vouchers and subsidized travel or holidays. Employees are often entitled to buy the company’s goods at discount or to benefit from its services at preferential rates. For example, staff in banks and building societies are able to obtain mortgages at favorable rates. The working hours may be unattractive and "antisocial", with shift-work being involved. The length of the working day, the number of holidays and the convenience of ’flextime’ working can all influence the level of job satisfaction.
The environment also influences job satisfaction. This includes the levels of noise, vibration or dust, the availability and appearance of canteen, changing, cleaning and other facilities and the degree and quality of heating and ventilation (e. g. the existence of air-conditioning). Other factors influencing job satisfaction include the degree of job security and the existence of friendly colleagues.
These factors do not operate in isolation but combine to give an overall level of satisfaction for a particular job. A person may decide to take a career in one of the ’caring’ professions, such as nursing or social work, which tends not to be highly paid in the UK because of the content of the job, the status given to it by the public and the level of responsibility involved. However, pay is still a major consideration and many people regard pay levels as the most important of these factors.
