I’d like to talk about the marriage law. In feudalistic China, men were superior to women and they were allowed to marry more than once. Since the founding of People’s Republic of China in 1949, polygamy has been banned and monogamy has been written into the law. What’s more, people can freely choose their life partner instead of being forced by their parents to marry someone they don’t know or love as in the arranged marriages in the old days. Based on this, women’s social status has been significantly raised. The law also encourages people to respect the sacredness of marriage. It’s been working pretty well for more than half a century and has utterly changed our society in a positive way. As a supporter for gender equality, I cheer for the enactment of this law. First and foremost, it uplifts women and protects their rights. Women were treated as subordinates or even traded as goods before the 20th century under the feudalistic system. Also, the old morality required women to obey their male family members and abandon self-consciousness. But with the new marriage law, family relationship has entered a new phase of mutual respect and shared responsibility. Historically speaking, recognizing women’s rights and status was vital for the post-war republic. The law has helped women stand on the equal ground as men, contributing their intelligence and diligence to the building of a modernized China.
