In a compartment of a subway, a women passenger is attentively reading a book. Her behavior appears weird to the nearby passengers who are habitually fiddling with their mobile phones. They gaze at her with eyes and mouth wide open. This picture implies the decline in people’s desire for paper hooks. To many, it seems that digital world would render paper books obsolete. They blindly believe in the convenience and efficiency of their mobile phones and laptops, arguing digital devices can provide easy access to book resources. However, the fact is always that digital books hardly win the competition for attention with games or social network tools downloaded on the same devices. Despite an increasing stock of e-books, distractions cause reduction in reading time and negatively affect reading quality. The devices especially designed for reading do not guarantee reading quality either. The inconvenience of scribbling notes makes it impossible for readers to keep timely record of critical understanding, subconsciously discouraging readers from deeply thinking. It is unwise to brush paper books aside. Paper books have their irreplaceable advantages. The most important one is to enable readers to respond. People can freely mark important phrases and comment in the margin. For serious learning, people should return to paper books.
