    Some officials, including foreign ones, think that raising retirement age is an urgent need for change because people’s life expectancy has been improved from around 40 to 74, which will give rise to many serious problems, such as unstable life without pension, losing spiritual comfort and so on. However, higher retirement age may help solve these difficult problems. Hu Xiaoyi, deputy minister of Human Resources and Social Security, firmly approved this reform and told Xinhua in an interview that considering China’s current development stage and some emerging problems, raising retirement age must go on the government agenda. And by pushing forward the reform in a progressive way, the country will not only realize steady transition of the new policy, but also avoid huge impact on the current employment situation. Another official said that raising retirement age in progressive steps would be in line with China’s labor market realities and should be prioritized. Yang Yansui, director of the Tsinghua Center for Employment and Social Security, said if the mandatory retirement age retained in current stage, it would place huge pressure on the government. Therefore, raising retirement age will be a wise reform to improve the overall level of the whole country.

    According to a survey, nearly 70 percent of Chinese people, mostly young ones, are opposed to the proposal to raise the retirement age. In their opinions, raising retirement age will have a huge impact on them when seeking jobs. Liu Qiang, just out of college, said, "I had never thought to face the fact that hardly had I graduated from the college when I became an unemployed. From this perspective, higher retirement age will be a nightmare for would-be graduates". At the same time, senior citizens are also firmly against the policy because they believe that they will have to work longer and continue to pay more endowment insurance. For one thing, the delay of retirement age means that the old could still create wealth and thus, promote the development of the country. Besides, reducing pensions would largely decrease the government pressure. For another, it would reduce the stress of the younger generation. It is a heavy burden for young couples to support both parents and children. They could think more of their own life instead of always worrying about their parents if the reform is carried out.
