This cartoon reflects a common sight in our daily life—gift-giving for teachers. This issue has aroused public concern and provoked a fierce debate. Some people approve it out of concerns about expressing thankfulness to teachers. They argue that respecting teachers has been one of the most important Chinese virtues since the Confucian era. However, objectors argue that this trend is against the genuine and nature of the teacher. Meanwhile, expensive presents mean the deprivation of the right to enjoy equal education resources for students from low-income families. Actually, I believe it is beyond reproach for students to show respect to teachers’ work by giving presents, especially those made by students themselves. But parents should not interfere in the relationship between kids and their teachers by spending a lot of money buying pricy gifts.
