DEARBORN—Gamma Motors announced today that it posted a loss of nearly $1 billion for the month of April. This followed a March loss of $840 million, and a February loss of $550 million. Industry analysts say that weak global demand for autos has been especially hard on Gamma, which depends heavily on its sales in foreign markets.
Despite fears of deeper losses and even possible bankruptcy, Gamma president Rick Warren says the company has no immediate plans for layoffs or restructuring. Instead, Warren says, "The company is going to speed up the launch of its new line of hybrid vehicles to stay competitive. We will also try to speed up our development and production of new compact models." He added that the company "is doing everything that it can to help its suppliers improve their efficiency and productivity."
Warren, who has run Gamma for nearly 15 years, also stressed that the company’s employees are the key to avoiding bankruptcy. "We are going to focus more on employee enrichment and training seminars. That will give us a smarter, better performing staff with skills that match the most up-to-date advances in technology."
When asked to confirm rumors about Gamma’s plans to move its headquarters from Dearborn to Canfield Beach, Warren said simply "there are no such plans." Gamma currently has offices and manufacturing operations in 22 countries.
